Building Library Skill Guides in Your Institution’s LMS

Presenter: Trent Brager, Online Librarian, Globe Education Network

Teaching library skills in asynchronous online courses is often limited to screencast videos that shows students how to navigate the library website.  Inefficient?  Yes!  Compare the time spent creating videos to the time students spend viewing them.  Ouch!  However, instead of waiting for a video to reveal information, there is a simple solution.  By using visual step-by-step guides in the LMS, students are immediately exposed to your tutorials.  A visual walk-through also offers an accessible solution that can be distributed to an array of courses and centrally updated.

Collaboration between Media, Librarians, and IT

Presenters: Jonathan Carlson, Science Librarian; Adam Konczewski, Digital Media Specialist; College of Saint Benedict/St. John’s University

As part of our strategic plan, the College of Saint Benedict/Saint John's University is working to implement more collaboration between Media Services, Librarians, and campus IT. We held several brainstorming sessions to talk about how we might collaborate, and we are currently implementing our plan.  We are holding training sessions for all librarians and media staff on various topics and have implemented librarian liaisons specializing in a particular media service, i.e. 3D printing, video editing, and data visualization.  These liaisons will help tie information literacy learning goals into media instruction sessions.

A description of E-books Minnesota: an innovative, statewide e-book service providing access across the state from Minnesota's amazing and large group of independent publishers.

Research as Inquiry: Being Mindful of Retractions

Presenter: Amy Riegelman, Social Sciences Librarian; University of Minnesota, Twin Cities

The research environment is complex and inconsistent.  Retracted articles are discoverable, but do our users grasp the complexities of retractions? Riegelman will show examples of inconsistencies with retraction notices in databases and search engines (e.g., JSTOR, Ebsco, Google Scholar). Riegelman will also highlight dispositions (e.g., critical stance, persistence, flexibility) from the ACRL Information Literacy Framework that coincide with retraction awareness.  Attendees will leave with a general understanding of retractions as well as suggestions for how to communicate with our users.

How to Weed a Reference Collection by 25% in One Year

Presenters: Rachel Wightman, Library Faculty-Reference and Instruction Librarian; Kimberly Sy, Library Faculty-User Education and Circulation; Normandale Community College

Like most libraries, the Normandale Community College Library regularly asks questions of how to balance collection currency and relevancy with available space. In order to streamline the Reference section, library faculty at Normandale embarked on a large weeding project of the library’s reference collection during AY15. This session will give the practical steps used, which resulted in weeding the collection by 25% in one academic year.
