Talkin’ ’Bout My Generation

A conference within a conference

When you attend the MLA 2013 Annual Conference, you’ll be getting two conferences in one!

Libraries are becoming centers for positive aging. With networking opportunities for mid-life entrepreneurs, classes in poetry and drawing, information about volunteering or encore careers, financial literacy workshops and partnerships with universities, workforce agencies and museums, libraries all across the country are responding to the aging of America. As they take extended longevity and new knowledge of aging into account in both management and practice, librarians are transforming both senior and adult services. A new field of practice is emerging (50+ library services) that aims to meet the diverse interests and needs of the Baby Boomers and other active older adults who constitute an increasing proportion of our population.

If you have an interest in library services to older adults, check out Talkin’ ‘Bout My Generation. Look for hands-on activities, displays, and these featured breakout sessions:

Thu, Oct 1010:00–11:00amHidden in Plain Sight: Libraries Respond to the Aging of AmericaDiantha D. Schull, author of 50+ Library Services: Innovation in Action

Appy Hour breakfast showcase

Friday, 7:00–8:00am

Droid, iPhone, iPad... Whatever device you use, there’s an app for that in the Exhibit Hall on Friday morning during Breakfast with Exhibitors. Grab something to eat, talk apps at the breakfast table, and consult with one of our app ambassadors for an opportunity to test recommended apps for yourself. The app ambassadors have selected a wide variety of apps for all devices to ensure that there’s something for everyone.

Get Your Flash On: Librarian Paparazzi

Thursday & Friday, during intermissions and Exhibit Hall activities

The MLA Membership and Communications Committees are joining forces to host "Get Your Flash On: Librarian Paparazzi.” Follow the red carpet to our booth in the Exhibit Hall. You can have a professional photograph taken and uploaded to the MLA online membership directory on the spot. Or participate in MLA’s first ever rock video! We want to create videos that will help us share the awesomeness of our libraries and our conference with the rest of the world. We’ll ask participants questions such as "What rocks at your library?” and "What has rocked your library world today?” If you’re feeling shy about an interview, we’re also planning to create a shoe montage, so stop by to share your style. From sensible to sassy, we want to display the full range of librarian cool. Are you ready for your close-up?

Let’s Get this Party Started!

Set 1 (Thursday, 10:00–11:00am)

If you are new to MLA and/or a first-time attendee at the conference, the Membership Committee has plans to make it easier for you to meet new people and learn about MLA. You won’t want to miss our orientation to help you get the party started. This breakout session will introduce MLA and highlight conference events. You’re bound to become a conference expert after attending this fun and informative session!

Silent Auction

Thursday & Friday, during intermissions and Exhibit Hall activities

This annual fundraiser, managed by the Minnesota Library Foundation, raises much-needed funds to support the mission of the Foundation: to distribute funds to enhance services and increase public awareness of Minnesota libraries. Learn how you can participate.

Book Sales and Signings

Friday at specific times

Selected books from featured authors Unshelved (aka Gene Ambaum and Bill Barnes), Laura Purdy Salas, and Mary Sharratt will be available for sale and signing.

RART Happy Hour

Thursday, 6:30–7:30pm, at The Martini Lounge (11 5th Ave S, St. Cloud)

Known for its brevity, the Readers’ Advisory Round Table (RART) annual business meeting will quickly sum up the year’s goals and accomplishments and then move on to the highlight of the evening: discussion of our favorite books from the past few years! Come join us for a relaxing and fun time. You need not be a member of RART to attend.

Battle of the Bands! Trivia Night

Thursday, 6:30–9:30pm

sponsored by the Minnesota Multitype Library Systems
Tune up your trivia and get ready to show your smarts and rock your brain at the Battle of the Bands Trivia Night!
