MLA Response to COVID-19

April 24, 2020
The Minnesota Library Association commends the work of Governor Walz and his team of experts for keeping the best interests of the state of Minnesota in the forefront.

At the same time, MLA encourages library leaders to take a long-term view and begin preparing for the effects and consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic.  A critical step in this process is retaining and compensating library workers regardless of their paid position in their organization.

Be well and stay safe.

March 17, 2020
The Minnesota Library Association (MLA) is committed to serving staff and supporters from libraries of all types and is aware that all libraries are facing difficult decisions about library services. We want to maintain as much access to our resources and services as possible to help support our communities, but we must also realize that public health is paramount.

Earlier this morning the American Library Association (ALA) put out the following statement, “Although closing a library is a local decision, we urge library administrators, local boards, and governments to close library facilities until such time as library workers and our communities are no longer at risk of contracting or spreading the COVID-19 coronavirus.”

MLA realizes that any decision to close a library should be a local decision and that the library leaders should work with their local city and county leaders on the best course of action. Consideration should include the wellbeing of staff and library users. If a library continues to be open, it should follow all necessary precautions provided by the Minnesota Department of Health and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). That being said, MLA strongly recommends that public and academic libraries suspend public operations and consider closing to prevent the spread of the coronavirus.

In accordance with CDC guidelines and our commitment to preventing the spread of COVID19, MLA board and event organizers have taken the unfortunate precaution of cancelling MLA spring events including:

  • 3/27/2020       CYP Unconference
  • 3/31/2020   Legislative Day – there may still be virtual activities depending on the status of the legislature
  • 4/17/2020        PLD Day
  • 5/1/2020          ARLD Day

Over the next few weeks’ sub-unit leaders and event organizers will assess options for possibly rescheduling these events.

With many of you already registered for these spring events, our staff are developing methods for managing refund requests for the paid events. We need a few days to create an orderly system so look for an email in a few days with instructions on how to access your refund.

2020 MLA Annual Conference

Sept. 30 - Oct. 2

Given the current environment and ever changing restrictions due to the Coronavirus, the MLA Board has decided to host a virtual conference rather than a traditional in-person conference for 2020.

More details will be provided soon!
