BREAKOUT SESSION DESCRIPTIONS

KEYNOTE

Keynote speaker, Lee Van Orsdel, will give a talk entitled Escaping Gravity: the Academic Library Reimagined. Grand Valley State University’s Mary Idema Pew Library, Learning and Information Commons, which opened in June 2013, was designed to evoke new behaviors, perceptions and experiences, redefining the library’s role in student learning. Van Orsdel will describe the concepts and principles that drove the design of the Pew Library and its innovative services and programs. Steelcase Corporation partnered with the library in 2015 to complete a year-long post-occupancy research project.  That research and other data gathered by the library’s User Experience Team provide insights into how students understand and use the new spaces and the many programs in the building.  These insights may be useful for libraries considering large or small renovation projects, as well as libraries that have the opportunity to build new facilities. In addition to her keynote address, Ms. Van Orsdel will lead a breakout session on Intentional Design: Creating Library Spaces that Impact Learning.

Van Orsdel has forty-six years of leadership experience in academic libraries in Alabama, Kentucky and Michigan, including reorganization, staff development, leadership, program innovation and library design. Recently retired, Van Orsdel was dean of university libraries at Grand Valley State University from 2005 to 2016. Under her leadership GVSU Libraries won the 2012 ACRL Excellence in Academic Libraries Award for universities and the 2014 State Librarian’s Excellence Award. Van Orsdel supplied the vision for Grand Valley’s new main library. The $60 million, LEED Platinum project opened in June 2013 and has since welcomed over four million visitors and hundreds of libraries in the US and around the world. In September 2016 the library was named a New Landmark Library by Library Journal.

PRE-CONFERENCE OPPORTUNITY

We hope you can attend a pre-ARLD Day workshop entitled Minnesota Librarians Implementing the ACRL Information Literacy Framework, on Thursday, April 27. Unsure about how to move ahead with the ACRL Framework for Information Literacy at your institution? Join the Minnesota Library Association Instruction Roundtable (IRT) for an  interactive workshop designed to help you plan the next steps for your instruction program or individual teaching practice. This workshop is an opportunity to learn more about the rationale and philosophy behind the Framework, draw from the frames to develop student learning outcomes and assessment tools, discuss using the Framework for faculty outreach, and find out how other Minnesota librarians are putting the Framework into practice. After the workshop, attendees will be invited to participate in IRT’s ACRL Framework “23 Things” online program, an opportunity to utilize and implement the Framework through readings and activities while sharing your progress with colleagues across Minnesota.

The workshop will be held in the Community Program Room at the Maplewood Public Library. The event will run from 1-5pm with lunch included. Registration will be capped at 60.

The following Thai lunch buffet will be served for the Pre-Conference:

--Stir Fry Basil Chicken
--
Tofu Pad Thai
--Stir Fried Mixed Vegetables
