An Abbreviated Hands-on Introduction to a Creative Design Process 

Presenter: Barry Kudrowitz, Assistant Professor of Product Design, University of Minnesota

This workshop is a condensed version of a design process. It includes framing a problem, team-based warm-up games, team-based idea generation, idea sorting and selection, prototyping, and pitching ideas.  The participants work in small teams and the activities have supplementary animated slides.  The workshop stresses the importance of rapid iteration, quantity of ideas, and collaboration.

Meeting at the Intersection: A Library Labyrinth

In 2013 Metropolitan State University created a labyrinth and reflective garden as a space to walk, meditate, and learn about the environment. To develop the space, they worked in partnership with the St. Paul public library, university faculty from Nursing and Psychology, landscape architects, students, neighborhood residents, and university staff. The space, as well as the planning process itself, have been about fostering connections and nurturing community. In this session you will learn how and why Metro State decided to create a labyrinth and reflective garden and how the space is being integrated into library services and programming, university curriculum, and is enhancing the lives of students, neighborhood residents, staff, and faculty. We will show how organizations, such as public libraries, public schools, and universities, can come together and create shared spaces and opportunities to nurture both the body and mind of learners.

 

Let's Get Digital: U of M Digital Course Packs

Course materials such as textbooks and course packs are becoming increasingly expensive for students, and faculty are presented with more and more confusing options concerning how to incorporate relevant content into their courses.  How can libraries help?  This session discusses the Digital Course Pack project at the University of Minnesota - Twin Cities, the goals of which are to streamline the course readings creation process for instructors, integrate library content into course curriculum, present materials in the campus course management system (Moodle), include royalty-based readings when necessary, and save students money.  The project also highlights a very successful partnership and collaboration between the Libraries, Bookstore, Copyright Permissions Center, and Office of Information Technology.  This session will include a demo of the system, usage and student savings data, and student and faculty feedback from thefour semesters of this project.

Is “One Search” the Answer?

Love them or hate them, Google-like search tools have infiltrated academic libraries across the state. This session will involve a panel discussion about the impact of one-search tools on instruction practices and student research methods. The panel of instruction librarians will include librarians from a several institutions and will be focused on three popular discovery tools: EBSCO Discovery Service, Summon (ProQuest), and Primo (Ex Libris). These librarians will be asked to reflect on several questions relating to the implementation and teaching of this next-generation search tool. Bring your questions and ideas and join us for what we hope will be a lively discussion.

 

Come Create an Infographic!

Information graphics, as we have heard for a number of years, present complicated information quickly and clearly. The same can be said of librarians. If you’ve wondered how infographics might help you with library instruction, promotion, annual reporting, or marketing, but haven’t yet had the chance to explore, this session is for you. It will provide a brief introduction to infographic tools and practices, but most importantly will include hands-on time to create an infographic for yourself. Please bring a laptop if you have one (and a willingness to look over a colleague’s shoulder if you don’t).

 

 

Deep Collaboration for Digital Humanities

St. Olaf College recently embarked on a four-year, grant-funded initiative to catalyze digital humanities (DH) scholarship and to build a sustainable service model for DH projects. This session will explore the ways in which librarians, instructional technologists, and others are aligning resources and goals to cultivate “deep collaborations” in support of DH. We will discuss how the DH team at St. Olaf is developing new workflows, rethinking our traditional job roles, and re-imagining our physical spaces to manage DH projects. We will also consider how our DH service model has empowered us to think creatively about other opportunities for collaboration. Session participants will take away practical ideas for trying deep collaborations at their institutions and specific examples of collaboration in support of DH.

You don't have to have the fanciest equipment or software to make a good video. You do have to know what makes videos fun to watch. YouTube is awash with creators that make fun, smart, snappy videos. Learn how to steal ideas from them, plus get some technical tips from a librarian who uses YouTube to communicate with library staff and students.

This session will discuss the successful methods University of Minnesota's Diversity Outreach Collaborative used to build leadership in the area of diversity at all levels of the Libraries, based upon the principle that Diversity is Everyone's Everyday Work.   The Collaborative will share the strategies they have learned that will help attendees develop educational programs for their staff; create and grow their libraries' diversity committees; encourage collaboration with departmental, institutional and community partners; and build leadership skills across their libraries.

The Lifecycle of a Digital Flower

Our presentation will explore emerging technologies that let us and our users create and innovate in the physical and digital worlds. Using a three-dimensional scan and print of a piece from the Arboretum's collection, we'll talk about different intellectual property questions and show how they shed light on more conventional intellectual property issues in digitization.

From "Apples to Apples" to "Topics to Keywords"

Many universities support video game scholarship, and in turn, academic libraries have developed gaming services to support student interests, scholarship, and teaching. Research suggests that students struggle most with developing topics and that game-based learning is an opportunity to increase student engagement. The University of Minnesota Libraries Gaming Community of Practice is developing an information literacy party card game to align with information literacy competency standards. The game will be used in undergraduate-level courses with the goal of helping students develop paper topics and related search terms. We will play this game as a demonstration while explaining the rules.

 

Virtual Reference Services: Going Beyond Chat

Learn how Rasmussen College’s Midwest library team has taken virtual reference beyond standard chat service with a “personal librarian” initiative that includes customized time-of-need video email messaging and the launch of a virtual reference room.

 

Hybrid Flipped Classroom in Library Instruction

 

Presenters: Kasia Gonnerman, Head of Research and Instruction; Kris MacPherson, Reference/Instruction Librarian; Jason Paul, Reference/Instruction & Emerging Technologies Librarian; St. Olaf College

 

R&I librarians at St. Olaf College have integrated elements of Flipped Classroom to augment the traditional program of course-integrated instruction with screencasting. What we have learned in the process is that the key to ascertain the relevance and vitality of a partially flipped model is partnering with both faculty and students to create and disseminate online materials, as well as determine the most appropriate audience as the materials' recipients. The screencast modules we created so far focus on teaching students core skills, procedures, and areas of need identified by individual faculty. Typically, students are asked to watch the videos prior to the in-class session and to complete brief exercises relevant to their research assignment. Both tutorials and exercises are embedded in the LibGuide that librarians prepare for each session using exercise responses collected through a Google Form, which can be shared with the faculty member teaching the course.

 

Coursesourcing Your Library Web Site Redesign

What happens when you turn over your web site to first term, first year students for redesign? Library staff partnered with a freshman seminar in Computer Science to examine and produce mock-ups of a redesigned home page. We gained insights into how new students engage with our site and what they find is important. We took what we saw to begin conversations with the campus Web Team about overhauling a web site that has not been substantially updated since 2006.

 

It's All Fun and Games (in an Academic Library)

Friday nights at a small liberal arts college in the middle of the prairie can be...well...dull. By creating Game Night once a month, the librarians at Briggs Library (UM Morris) saw the opportunity to engage students in a fun and creative way. This session will tell you how we developed Game Night and how you can do the same.
