Twenty-five members of the Minnesota library community embarked on their eighteen-month MLA Institute for Leadership Excellence May 3rd-6th at Cragun’s Resort in Brainerd, Minnesota.
Participants learned about leadership styles and many perspectives, hearing from several current library leaders as well as leaders in other nonprofit organizations. They also learned about managing change, writing and giving elevator speeches, discovering their strengths, and setting goals. Evenings allowed participants to relax around a fire (with s’mores), get to know each other, and enjoy lively entertainment.
The MILE retreat is only the beginning of participants’ leadership experience. Over the next year and a half, they will meet with mentors who will help them move toward meeting their professional goals, participate in MLA (including foster relationships with other library members from across the state), and plan the 2013 Leadership Institute.
The MLA Institute for Leadership Excellence provides participants with the opportunity to:
- Develop and refine skills necessary to be a leader in the libraries of tomorrow
- Develop and move forward on professional and personal goals
- Network and make connections with people in the broader community
- Reflect on the variety of leadership opportunities available at the local, regional, and state levels
- Be matched with and work with a mentor for several months following the Institute
